Policy Issues

Computer Usage Policies

Computer Usage Policies apply to all users of JCU facilities. Please read these policies carefully.

Information, Technology and Resources (IT&R) has the responsibility of providing an enterprise wide anti-virus software solution for all computing equipment owned by JCU and situated on JCU premises. IT&R is also responsible for maintaining the distribution of current virus signatures and software install sets to the above mentioned machines. The deployment and installation of this anti-virus software is the responsibility of Divisional and School IT Support officers. There is now a guide to installing Sophos for stand alone computers and home use for staff.

Student Responsibilities

IT&R has no responsibility to provide or support students with any anti-virus solution for off-campus equipment not owned by the University. But it is of benefit to the University to have students work protected and minimise the incidence of cross infection by "home" borne computer viruses.

The only way to minimise the risk of virus attack is to maintain a virus checker with current virus signatures. This is the responsibility of the individual student.

General and Academic Staff

IT&R recommends installation of this product. It is an opportunity to provide a more secure IT environment, save dollars on individual installs of virus software campus-wide and thus for the JCU community to reduce costs and allow IT Support staff to focus on more productive tasks.

SOPHOS is documented on the IT&R Licensing Agreements and Offers page. There is now a guide to installing Sophos for stand alone computers and home use.
