About Us
The Indigenous Health Unit of the Faculty of Medicine Health & Molecular Sciences was established in the first half of 2003, under the leadership of Associate Professor Jacinta Elston, Assistant Dean (Indigenous Health).
The Unit provides a focus for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander health issues and strategies across the Faculty, including:
- Improving Indigenous student retention through dedicated support programs and strategies;
- Recruitment of Indigenous students particularly form NQ communities;
- Strengthening the capacity of all the Faculty programs to develop and provide, relevant and appropriate Indigenous health curriculum;
- Raising the profile of health professionals degrees and the faculty within local communities;
- Advocating for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander health issues within the Faculty & broader university community;
- Strengthening Faculty links with local Indigenous communities, and
- Building the Faculty’s capacity to engage in Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander research.
